In 1578, Bishop Cotta ordered the canons to reside on the Island of San Giulio, in 16 canonical houses. The canonical house “St. Anthony Abbot,” now “Gloria Dei,” was purchased in 2006 by the Benedictine Abbey “Mater Ecclesiae” as a residence for the nuns. Equipped with a covered passage, it allows the nuns to move around the island in complete privacy. The project involves the restoration and maintenance of the roof and the north facade of the house, whose deteriorated condition allows rainwater infiltration. The plan includes the removal and restoration of the stone slabs (beole), the maintenance of the supporting structure and the wooden frames made of chestnut and larch, the replacement of the membrane, the consolidation of the plaster on the north wall, and the adjustment of the lifeline system to ensure safe maintenance operations.

The work is particularly costly, as the materials must be stored and transported from the mainland by special boats and then brought back to the site. The completion of the project will enable the re-functionalization of one of the ancient canonical houses on the Island of San Giulio, ensuring its full use and, therefore, its preservation by the nuns of the Benedictine Abbey. The funding of the project will allow the nuns to continue their virtuous and tireless work of restoring and conserving the buildings on the Island of San Giulio, a task to which they have dedicated themselves for 50 years. This island is an architectural gem, an invaluable heritage of culture and faith.
